The Maltese Islands were voted the 3rd best dive destination in the world in 2009, by the readers of “Diver” magazine UK. The sea temperature is mild all year round and visibility is good, anything between 20 to 40 metres. This coupled with the diversity of sites, from caves and holes to wrecks of ships and planes left over from previous conflicts make this a fascinating group of islands to explore.
It is possible to visit several sites in a single day, due to the close proximity of the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino, whether from shore or a boat. Amongst the top sites, would be HMS Maori found at Marsamxett harbour. She played a significant role in the search for the German battleship the Bismarck during the Second World War and was sunk in 1942 close to two other sites, the Carolita and MV Odile. The Bristol Blenheim Bomber wreck is one of only 5 of its kind and is located a short boat ride from Zonqor Point. At 42m this site is best tackled by the more experienced diver, but provides a fascinating insight into the bravery of the war time aircrews that operated from Malta during the siege of WW2.
As well as wrecks there are numerous natural formations on all three islands for divers of all skill levels and experience, including the 16m deep “Blue Hole” at Dwejra in Gozo reputedly one of the favourite dives of Jacques Cousteau. Snorkelers are well catered for as well, with many fascinating shallow dives around the coastlines and a short trip to Comino will unveil the azure waters of the “Blue Lagoon”, well worth the effort!!
The Maltese Islands boast around 40 accredited dive centres some of which are affiliated to major hotels-for example H2O Divers operates out of the Radisson Blu Golden Sands Resort & Spa and The Riviera Resort & Spa, while The Westin Dragonara Resort offers dive trips from it’s onsite specialists Divewise. One of the oldest diving centres in Malta is the Calypso Sub-Aqua Club which recently won the British Sub-Aqua Club’s (BSAC) international diving centre award. Dive Centres such as these offer a full range of courses as well as dive packages.
